May is National Asthma & Allergies Awareness Month

I don’t know about you, but over the past few years, my allergies have gotten worse than usual.

Since May is peak season for allergy and asthma sufferers, I thought it was the perfect time to learn more about these diseases.

Asthma is a disease of the lungs that occurs when airways become blocked or narrowed causing difficulty breathing. While asthma affects 20 million Americans, each case is unique. Some people are born with it although it sometimes doesn’t show up until later in life.

Allergies are a disease of the immune system that causes an overreaction to substances. You may experience allergies from external or internal influences. Allergies are grouped by kinds of triggers, such as time of year, food, medicine, pollutants in the air, etc.

Both allergy and asthma sufferers can live normal, fun lives. If you think you may have or be developing allergies or asthma, please contact your doctor.

Being educated about these diseases helps us better control them if we are suffering from them. For more information, visit the Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology’s website at
